The novel explores Tolstoy's theory of history, and in particular the insignificance of individuals such as Napoleon and Alexander.
After leaving the university in without a degree, Tolstoy returned to Yasnaya Polyana, where he planned to educate himself, to manage his estate, and to improve the lot of his serfs.
Somewhat surprisingly, Tolstoy did not consider War and Peace to be a novel nor did he consider many of the great Russian fictions written at that time to be novels.
But the same man apart from that connection appears to be free. Soon after receiving his commission, Tolstoy fought among the defenders at Sevastopol against the Turks.

The concluding section of the novel was written during another of Russia's seemingly endless wars with Turkey. As he famously said, "Writing poetry is like ploughing and dancing at the same time".
Tolstoy based the prescription against oaths including promises on an idea adapted from his early work: Tolstoi reduced the conventional exciting plots of such stories to the level of mere incidents which he used as a framework to display his true interest, a neatly categorized series of psychological portraits of the Russian soldiers and officers and their opponents, the mountain tribesmen.
He becomes anonymous in all the chaos, shedding his responsibilities by wearing peasant clothes and shunning his duties and lifestyle. Because governments rely on the threat of violence to enforce their laws, Tolstoy also became a kind of anarchist.
His first published work, Childhood, appeared pseudonymously in The Contemporary Russ. Maude, The Life of Tolstoy. Tolstoy served as a second lieutenant in an artillery regiment during the Crimean Warrecounted in his Sevastopol Sketches.
Thus, Tolstoy became a pacifist. All three stages of Tolstoy's life and writings pre-conversion, conversion, effects of conversion reflect the single quest of his career: He attempts to liberate his serfsbut ultimately achieves nothing of note.
In Tolstoy met V.It was followed by a sequel, Boyhood, and a number of tales of military life.
When, inTolstoi retired from the army and went  to live in St. Petersburg, his reputation as a writer was already very considerable.
Indeed, Tolstoy's life is one of the best documented accounts we have of any writer, for the diaries he began at seventeen he continued through old age.
